Trump is promising free antibody treatments for everyone. It won’t be that simple.

How quickly could approval come: Regeneron said it requested an emergency authorization from FDA just hours after Trump touted the antibody cocktail in a video Wednesday afternoon. Lilly said it sought authorization earlier on Wednesday.

Trump, who has put unusual pressure on FDA to quickly approve coronavirus treatments and vaccines, is now vowing federal regulators will green-light antibody therapies from both companies.

“Emergency use authorization is all set, and we gotta get it signed now,” Trump said in the Wednesday video.

It’s not clear how quickly FDA will decide on either company’s application for an emergency use authorization, but this raises another inflection point for an agency that has seen its independence challenged by political pressure during the pandemic. The FDA previously provided emergency use authorizations for two treatments touted by Trump — hydroxychloroquine and convalescent plasma — despite scant evidence of their effectiveness. The FDA later revoked the hydroxychloroquine authorization after rigorous trials found the anti-malarial didn’t work on Covid-19 patients.

An early emergency use authorization for antibody treatments could also make it difficult for companies to attract volunteers for clinical trials that could prove whether they work and at what dosage. That has been a concern for ongoing convalescent plasma trials after FDA provided an emergency authorization about six weeks ago.

There’s likely not enough drug for everyone: In the upbeat video posted by the White House on Wednesday evening, Trump promised he would provide antibody treatments free for every American. But experts are predicting shortages of the treatments, which are costly to produce, and few manufacturing facilities are equipped to make them.

Operation Warp Speed, the Trump administration program speeding coronavirus vaccines and therapeutics, has provided $450 million to Regeneron to supply as many as 300,000 doses for Americans at no cost before the end of the year. It’s unclear how the next doses will be distributed or what they might cost. Regeneron struck a deal with Roche this summer to boost manufacturing capacity, but the company hasn’t provided specific production goals.

Lilly has said it could supply as many as 1 million doses of its treatment before the end of the year, but it’s unclear if all those doses would be reserved for the U.S. or if Warp Speed would purchase them to provide to Americans at no cost.

Warp Speed officials are hoping that the antibody treatments can be rolled out quickly and act as a bridge to vaccines. It will likely take months to widely distribute a coronavirus vaccine, even if one gains approval before the end of the year.

Vaccine politics: Trump has conceded that a vaccine is unlikely to be authorized before the Nov. 3 election after this week’s release of FDA guidance toughening standards for emergency approval. The White House for weeks had opposed the guidance, which Trump has claimed without evidence was part of a political plot within FDA to prevent a vaccine approval before the election.

“I think we should have it before the election but frankly the

‘I Lost Over 100 Lbs. In 1.5 Years By Making These 4 Simple Tweaks To My Diet’

My name is Ashley Kincade (@ashleyloveebugg), and I am 25 years old. I live in Chandler, Arizona, and I am an operations manager. I was tired of having knee pain and no energy, so I worked with my doctor to create a calorie deficit to lose weight and did at-home YouTube workouts and High Fitness classes to lose over 100 pounds.

Before my weight loss journey, I struggled with overeating, food addiction, emotional eating, and yo-yo dieting. I was always too fatigued to workout, and I would end up giving up on working out because I thought it was too hard.

My feet and legs hurt all the time, and I was in my early 20s. I also had a knee injury, and moving around on it at my bodyweight prevented it from fully healing. I knew if I lost weight it would take the pressure off of my legs and my knees. I felt uncomfortable and out of breath even doing simple activities like running errands, like my body was entirely drained of energy.

I went to the doctor and she explained to me that I may develop other health issues. I didn’t want to be unhealthy at only 23.

So, I decided to make a New Year’s resolution in January 2018, and it was the only New Year’s resolution that I actually accomplished.

What made this resolution different from the others is that I shared with everyone that I knew that I was starting a weight loss journey. Telling all of my friends and family is what helped keep me accountable. I just wanted to be able to look in the mirror and feel good about myself again.

I’m allergic to dairy and soy, so I struggled when I first started my weight loss journey because I wasn’t sure what to eat. I would always go for unhealthy foods because it was the quickest and easiest thing that I could just grab and not have to think about.

When I began my health journey, I talked to my doctor about what types of food I should try incorporating into my diet, and she told me to always stay in a calorie deficit. I now try to stay away from as many processed foods as possible, and I also try not to eat a lot of carbs. (I don’t necessarily follow a low-carb diet or anything, but I try to stay away from unnecessary carbs.) It took a lot of trial and error to find what would keep me full and what I could make quickly, since I work retail.

I started by changing what I ate for breakfast every day. Once I got the hang of that, I changed what I ate for lunch, followed by snacks and dinners.

California Gov. Newsom receives flu shot during live news conference: ‘It’s a simple thing to do’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday received the flu shot during a live news conference, heeding advice health experts have stressed for months as flu season this year coincides with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“I’ve done this every single year, as long as I can remember,” Newsom said, according to a local news station. “It is a simple thing to do, and getting a flu shot is a safe thing to do.”

“By getting a flu shot, you’re protecting yourself, and you mitigate the impact that what some have referred to as the ‘twindemic’ of a potential second wave of COVID-19 transmissions and the flu happening concurrently putting stress, putting pressure, on our hospital system, draining resources and impacting the quality care that all of you deserve and expect of our health care delivery system,” the governor said, per KERO-TV.

Health officials are urging all Americans to receive the flu shot before the end of October.

“Healthy adults, including pregnant women, should get the vaccine as early as possible (pregnant women are not only at particularly high risk of influenza complications, they can also transmit immunity to their fetuses),”  Michelle Lin, an emergency room doctor, and professor of emergency medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, previously told Fox News.

The vaccine also reduces the risk of flu-related complications, as well as passing the virus to other people, namely pregnant women, young children and the elderly who are more susceptible, she added.

It takes roughly two weeks for the flu vaccine to take effect, during which time the body develops antibodies to protect against the virus.

While reactions to the flu shot may include a low-grade fever or muscle aches, the vaccine itself cannot cause the flu virus. The shot is either made with a virus that has been “killed” or “inactivated” or made with “only a single gene from a flu virus (as opposed to the full virus) in order to produce an immune response without causing infection,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

The news comes as the Golden State is expected to see a nearly 90% increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations over the next month, the Los Angeles Times reported, with some 4,864 people estimated to be hospitalized with the virus by Oct. 25.
